Computer slowing down when too many things are open? Or do you just fancy one of our simple RAM Upgrades?

Bring us your PC and if we have the memory in stock we can upgrade it by any amount up to 32GB (or 64GB for newer ones) while you wait. If we somehow don’t have the required modules in stock (very rare!) we can either hold on to your computer for a day until it arrives from one of our next-day delivery suppliers or we can give you a call and ask you to pop back in when it gets here.

Do i actually need more?

Want to know if you actually need one of our RAM Upgrades? Press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete buttons on your keyboard at the same time, and then choose “Start Task Manager” from the list. If you then click on the “Performance” tab and look for the number relating to memory use you will be able to see how much RAM is currently installed and how much is being used by your computer. The amount that is being used will go up the more things you are doing on your PC so try and open a few of your favourite programs to see how high it goes. If it’s getting to around 80% of the total then it is likely you could benefit from a few more gigabytes to prevent any bottlenecking.

Why is too little bad?

When your computer needs some and it doesn’t have any available it will copy something that hasn’t been used in a while out of your RAM into what is commonly referred to as a page file. This is a file on your hard drive that your computer uses to temporarily store what it needs to store in memory but can’t. The issue is that your hard drive is typically between 300 and 800 times slower than RAM and so when it needs to use that bit of data that it copied earlier it has to wait for it to be copied back, slowing everything down in the process. Still confused about exactly what it is that memory does? Take a look at this article we wrote about all of the different components inside your PC.

We’ll suggest you replace your existing ram during your RAM Upgrade so we can install a new dual or quad channel kit that will work faster, however you’re more than welcome to leave the older stuff in if you’re on a budget.
